Personality:
-Cynical: He judges every action negatively and will not look favorably upon anyone until he’s gotten to know him/her well.

-Thinks like a computer: For the most part, Lance has a set thought process with little mental flexibility. As a result, he often judges on first impression and is forced to deal with inconsistency later when his judgment turn out to be incorrect.

-Blunt: Lance isn’t a very sensitive person. He treats others with a blunt attitude and expects the same treatment back. He does not understand why people would lie to 'be nice', and will speak his mind even if his comments offend others.
[Note:] He becomes more reserved and calculating when faced with important issue (e.g. meetings with boss, job interviews…etc)

-Occasionally nice: Lance may have a rather negative disposition, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be nice sometimes. He occasionally performs random acts of kindness (e.g. updating his company’s firewall with his own improved anti-hacker programs) if he deems it necessary, but he likes to keep these acts as inconspicuous as possible.

-Others:
-He still has a sense of right and wrong, which is precisely what makes him hate D-64 for its lack of ‘justice’. However, he thinks that committing crimes ‘for the greater good’ is fully justified.
-He’s not the type of guy to start fights, but he will unhesitatingly retaliate if he feels that you’ve wronged him.

Likes/Dislikes:
+Consistency
+His laptop (other computers as well but he likes his laptop the best)
+Aves
+His mother
-Politics
-D-64
-People who hide their true selves
-Crowded places

Abilities:
Lance is a Logical thinker and top-tier programmer, but he can’t cope well when people act in inconsistent manners. He is also physically weak despite possessing great marksmanship.

History:

Condensed summary:
Lance's father's computer software company fell into debt when all its developing software codes were stolen by a hacker hired by his rival company. In order to keep his family from starving, Lance's father committed suicide and made it look like an accident so his life insurance payment can continue to financially support his wife and son.
Furious at this turn of events, Lance hacked into the rival company's CEO's account and publicized the email the CEO exchanged with the hacker he hired. The police arrested the CEO but could not find the hacker. Lance tried to trace the hacker himself but also failed. That was when CB approached Lance and offered to eliminate the hacker for him. Lance agreed and CB found and killed the hacker.

Lance’s father was the CEO of a computer software company. Due to the responsibilities that came with his position, Mr. Blackwood was rarely home, and the task of raising Lance fell to Mrs. Blackwood.

Being of French origin, Lance’s mother possessed a direct personality and taught her son to always speak his mind and act as he sees fit. Unfortunately, that approach did not work very well with the passive-aggressive dispositions of most of Lance’s classmates. When asked for his opinion, the boy will speak the truth even if it may hurt others’ feelings. This trait made him extremely unpopular among his classmates, who believed in ‘being nice’ even if it meant telling lies upfront and critiquing others behind their backs.

Lance could not understand why his classmates would hide their real thoughts with fake smiles and act inconsistently when talking to different people. Wasn’t the point of interacting with others to let other people know what you think and hear their opinions in return? Initially, Lance was only mildly bothered by his classmates’ strange behaviors. However, when he entered middle school, he found it difficult to tolerate all the gossips concocted by his teenage classmates as they took ‘talking behind people’s backs’ to the extreme.

His father noticed Lance’s dissatisfaction, and attempted to cheer Lance up by introducing him to the sport of shooting. After a few weekends at his father's favorite shooting range, Mr. Blackwood was forced to abort his plan due to his son constantly complaining about the physical demand of the sport as well as the sound of gunshot assaulting his eardrums.

Lance's father then tried a different approach and introduced the youth to computer programming. To his surprise, he immediately received a plethora of positive feedback from his son.

For the first time in his life, Lance had something that he could connect with. He found solace in the consistency provided by the programming language. The teen gradually grew distant from his ‘friends’ as he spent more and more of his free time behind his computer screen. Crime rate was increasing and college attendance declined due to the city’s funding policy, but Lance could care less as long as he had an electric outlet to plug his computer into.

Wanting to learn more about computer programming, Lance began to make daily visits to his father’s company. He would head straight there afterschool and leave with his father in the evening.

With his son spending one afternoon after another in his office, Mr. Blackwood could no longer work into the night, not when doing so would cause his son to miss dinner. Aside from not wanting to annoy his wife, he also wanted Lance to stay healthy and eat at proper times.

After editing his schedule to fit his new routine, Mr. Blackwood was pleasantly surprised when he found himself spending more time than he thought was possible with his wife and son.

His happiness was shared by the family. Lance enjoyed telling his parents (particularly his father) about his codes over the dinner table, and Mrs. Blackwood showed her appreciation for the extra family bonding time by serving splendid dishes to her husband and son. For Lance, this was the ideal family.

The Blackwoods’ perfect life came crashing down during Lance’s senior year in high school. A hacker hired by a rival company hacked into Mr. Blackwood’s company’s database and stole the software codes for all of the products currently in development. With the codes gone, the company failed to meet its product deadlines and incurred a heavy debt before eventually going bankrupt. Mr. Blackwood drowned himself in guilt for his inability to save his company. Realizing that he could no longer support his wife and son, he turned to (what seemed to his despairing mind) the most direct method to supply his family with the financial strength it needs.

He had bought a high-paying life insurance policy a while ago in case something happened to him while he was running his company. All he needed to do now was to make sure that something did happen.

On a weekday a month later, Lance found a farewell note on his desk when he returned from school. His mother was busy with her part time tutoring job so the youth was left to read the letter alone.
The letter explained Mr. Blackwood’s intended course of action and included an apology his failure to maintain their ‘ideal’ family. Lastly, Mr. Blackwood begged Lance to not tell anyone about the truth behind his death since the insurance company will not pay beneficiaries if the insured individual died by committing suicide.

Lance immediately dashed out of his house to look for his father. However, no matter where he went, he could not find Mr. Blackwood. When he finally returned home, he received a phone call from the police informing him that his father was hit by a car earlier in the day and died on his way to the hospital. An insurance agent called soon after to say that the insurance payment will be sent to them after two months.

Lance had never felt hatred as strong as what he experienced that moment. His father’s rival company not only destroyed Mr. Blackwood’s business, but it also pushed the man to take his own life. And the worst part of it all was that even though his father died to save his family from poverty, Lance had to treat his death as nothing more than an unfortunate accident.

Enraged by the unfairness of this situation, Lance hacked into the rival company’s CEO’s email account and publicizing the emails the CEO exchanged with the hacker. The CEO was arrested and his company was temporarily shut down. However, the hacker he hired could not be tracked, and the underfunded police force did not have enough resource to inquire any further.

Cursing the failure of the justice system, Lance dropped out of high school and decided to ‘finish the job’ on his own. However, before he could do anything, his mother broke down and fell into severe depression over her husband’s death. With no one to support the family, Lance’s quest for revenge was put on hold as he took up a part time job at his father’s favorite shooting range.

The owner of the shooting range would occasionally hold ‘shooting contests’ on days where business was slow. Lance originally stayed back and watched others shoot, but ended up joining one of the games on impulse when he remembered the days he spent here with his father. He was pleasantly surprised when his score placed him above all other participants, indicating that Mr. Blackwood's teachings haven't completely faded from his memory.

After two months, Lance left the shooting range when he received his father’s life insurance payment. At the same time, an old friend of Mr. Blackwood’s offered Lance a programming job in his startup company. Since programming was the only thing he was interested in at this point, Lance applied for the position and was immediately hired. Aside from the gaming programs he was asked to write, Lance also took the liberty to update the company’s network with an anti-hacker programs that he developed during his free time.

As the financial strength of his family stabilized again, Lance resumed his endeavors to locate the hackers responsible for bringing down his father’s company. However, he couldn’t find any significant clues, which only added to his frustration. That was when CB approached Lance and offered to find and eliminate the hacker for him. Needless to say, Lance accepted the proposal. He could care less for what the mysterious man meant by ‘elimination’. All that mattered to him was that the ones responsible for hurting his family will be punished for what they’ve done.

Lance did not need to wait for long. The morning news on the following day confirmed that the CB agent was as good as his word. Nobody even questioned the police report, which stated that a certain middle-aged man slipped on the tiles on his balcony and accidentally fell from his fifth floor apartment.

While his father was avenged, Lance’s dissatisfaction did not fade. He could not forgive D-64 for its failure to curb its crime rate.

As a countermeasure against possible deception, Lance learned to be careful with the decisions he made when it came to important issues. Instead of blurting out his opinion at first chance, he would remain quiet and carefully evaluate every option given to him. However, the bitterness within him continued to accumulate as he encountered more and more people who would lie for the sake of personal gain.

In an attempt to get the young programmer to ‘lighten up’, Lance’s boss bought him a small robotic bird for his 20th birthday. After thanking his superior, Lance took it home and replaced the program that dictated the bird’s behavior with an AI program that he wrote himself. He also took liberty in adding some codes that induced aggressive behavior from the bird if it ‘felt’ that its owner’s safety was threatened.

While governed by artificial intelligence, the bird soon became Lance’s ‘closest friend’. It provided a form of mental refuge for the friendless programmer. When he was under stress, Lance found it relaxing to watch his pet respond to him in consistent and predictable manners.

Due to his small companion, Lance’s mood stabilized while his dissatisfaction with his surroundings stayed below its tolerable threshold. At this point, his mother had recovered enough to take care of housework again, and everything settled down for a while.

Then one day, Lance received a text message from a mysterious source. The message was short and to the point, and Lance could only think of one person who would send him this message.

"The time has come for you to return the favor."

Aves:
-Its serial number (carved below its left wing) is 41766573. Hence, Lance calls it Aves.
-Can be used as a video/audio recording device.
-Functions by harvesting solar energy (when it’s not moving) and wind energy (when it’s flying around)
-Has several ‘defense’ mechanisms installed in case its owner gets himself into dangerous situations (which happens more often than not thanks to his blunt personality).
-It’s beaks and outside coating is made of the strongest commercial metal alloy and can withstand immense pressure as long as its joints don’t come loose.
-It does not ‘speak’. For the most part, it listens to Lance whenever they ‘talk’ and respond to him with physical gestures (e.g. tilting its head, gently pecking his hand, flying around above his head).
-Can perform basic cellphone functions, which almost entirely eliminates Lance's need for his cellphone.
-Has a tiny LCD display underneath the thin metal covering on its chest. It's mostly used for displaying electronic messages sent to Lance's phone.
-He also uploaded a debugging program into the bird, so it can sometimes help him out by running basic tests on his codes. To do this, Aves would need to be plugged into his laptop via the mini USB port beneath its right wing.

Miscellaneous:
-At this point in time, Lance doesn’t have any close (human) friends.
-Although not genetically enhanced, he looks younger than his actual age. As a result, he never forgets his ID since he is often asked to prove that he is of legal age (much to his annoyance).
-He has the skill necessary for a sharpshooter, but he is not physically fit for the position.

Relationships:
Avril B. Blackwood - Lance's mother. She's the only close family left to Lance and (so far) the only person Lace care deeply about.

Mr. Steiner - Lance's boss and the CEO of the programming company where Lance works. He was classmates with Lance's father and was great friends with the deceased man. He feels slightly guilty for not being able to help Mr. Blackwood before he committed suicide, and is trying to make up for his past failure by watching over his friend's son (Hence the job offer and the robotic bird).
